About the Author

Who is Nexus Publishing? Originally from a small town called Darlaston – about ten miles north of Birmingham – I moved to West Sussex about ten years ago to help develop one of the first online retailers. Having recently moved to Shropshire I am now enjoying the working from home life in a semi rural location. I have been a freelance writer and journalist for about fifteen years. Eight of them were spent doing various other jobs such as bookshop assistant, print finisher and returns clerk for a large library supplier, with the writing taking up evenings and any of my spare time. As you can see, much of my life so far has been spent working with books and publishing of one kind or another. My time as an employee came to a conclusion some six years ago with redundancy, so I took the opportunity – and the money – to see if I could survive as a full-time freelance writer. That was five years ago. There have been some lean times – just ask my wife, Joanne. But after tasting the freelance life, there’s no going back.

National Work From Home Day, Thursday, May 15

 workwiseuk-logo.jpg

This Thursday is work from home day. Whether you are an employer or an employee, this is the day to really try out working from home for yourself. More flexible working is the future. Over 2 million people already work at home, with millions more spending part of their working week in their home offices.

Organised by WorkWise UK, work from home day is part of work Work Wise Week. Their website says: “Benefit from smarter working practices by participating in National Work From Home Day. BT has widely implemented home working and improved its productivity by a staggering 20 per cent. These gains partly stem from eliminating commuting time, reducing staff stress as well as reducing congestion and carbon emissions. Also working from home frees up time, providing a better work-life balance. This will help create a more committed and motivated workforce.”

Phil Flaxton, chief executive of Work Wise UK says: “Not only does working from home reduce the amount of commuting people have to do, enhancing their work-life balance, but many are actually more productive. Although many organisations practise the age-old philosophy of ‘presenteeism’, they should open their eyes to the new work ethic spreading across the UK and try out home working: they may well be surprised.”

Work Wise Week 2008 will run from Thursday, May 15, until Wednesday, May 21, and has  events where you and your organisation can benefit and learn about smarter working.
